I would guess the trade-in program would be a for-profit operation,
"certain" workstations means you can't throw them your old '386 AT,
and the market for used workstations is firmer than you would think.
Dell also has a section that sells refurbished notebooks, I don't know about workstations. It is also a goodwill plus, to be able to safely get credit for your old stuff.
