Addi:

I read that article. It's interesting and LSI I think falls under the same business model as VLSI.

VLSI is a much cheaper stock than LSI and they made a remarkable turnaround from PC chipsets to communications with nary a reduction in revenues. I think their communications chips have been growing at 100% or thereabouts.

I also agree 100% that the Internet will change everything and one has to be invested in companies that enable that medium. However for chip investors there are other areas of high growth as well. And one of the huge ones is consumer electronics.

LSI is nicely positioned here. And they are getting into wireless communications in a big way. Plus LSI has a top-notch networking division. That recent CSCO win as well as the CPQ win highlights this. So with LSI you have both high growth areas - communications and conusmer electronics. Plus in an ancillary way the internet is heavily reliant on storage and LSI is again extremely well positioned here as well. So that's virtually all of LSI's segments in a good position. The one exception would be workstations and that kind of thing - an area I know little about.

Finally a quick note on ML - they could have mentioned LSI in that article as well. LSI recognized that the PC related world was not going to be the driver years ago. Much earlier than TXN and VLSI. (Plus they wanted to stay out of INTC's shadow.) VLSI almost had a near death experience 2-3 years ago when their PC chipset business died thanks to INTC. TXN changed their focus about 2-3 years ago. LSI on the other hand recognized and changed probably around the restructuring in 1992-1993 or about 5-6 years ago.

LSI's in a very solid position here. Yes I know the stock is doing nothing but that is nothing new. Also VLSI is in a pretty good position as well though as I've mentioned before VLSI may have a problem in new design wins though I do like their business model (heading towards sort of fabless) quite a bit.

If you are interested in the communications area entirely check out LU.

Shane.
