There may be similarities, but there is one big difference between Japan's banking problems and the US S&L debacle. The US problem involved basically land, while Japan's problem involves foreign and domestic commercial accounts at the biggest banks in the world. Thus the US problem was principally one of insuring depositors didn't lose their savings, while the Japanese problem is that their historically open-tap for business capital is being squeezed off.

I think Japan is headed for a serious recession, myself
