Ericsson , Bay Networks in deal

STOCKHOLM, March 16 (Reuters) - Swedish telecoms group AB LM Ericsson said on Monday it would collaborate with Bay Networks, Inc (BAY - news) to support a standard of technology which will be used to improve capacity on the Internet.

Ericsson said in a statement the deal with Bay Networks also included marketing of the technology.

Separately, Ericsson said it signed an agreement with General DataComm (GDC) (GDC - news) to develop this same technology, called Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS).

''It gives us the ability to go to the customer with a total solution package,'' Ericsson spokesman Lars Ostlund told Reuters.

He said the company was running trials this summer and the product would be ready late this year.

''Initial developments between Ericsson and GDC will be based on the current interim specification, leading to a fully MPLS compliant solution when the standard is finalised,'' Ericsson said in a statement.

Ericsson said that both it and Bay Networks were active members in the MPLS protocol development and standardisation effort.

''Both companies are open to discussion with other vendors who may wish to participate in the continued development of the MPLS standard and inter-operability tests,'' Ericsson said.
