IAI and IDMS COBOL In many ways COBOL is a flagship for Y2K tools. CA using IAI UNICAST 2000 for IDMS COBOL is a very strong statement. The quick turnaround shows how close to ready Ken was for this event, (he has had an IDMS COBOL version for years). No doubt some tweaking to fit the CA data dictionary/encyclopedia and other stuff happened prior to internal release. A few weeks and this will be on the shelves for customer use. I would guess June sometime, maybe slightly before. The short turn around should then have a minimal impact on the other scheduled products. Anyone doubting that CA is in bed with IAI for the full deal should rethink at this point. Here is the final proof. On another front: The market penetration of IAI in CA language remediation seems to me to have 2 components. The first is 'of remediation contracts and self directed remediations, how many will use the CA approved and supported tools?' This one seems like a more than 50% no brainer to me. The other tools are not equivalent in function. CA support is a huge factor. CA sales is a huge factor. IAI advertisement and track record is a big factor. The second part is: 'How many will remediate at all?' This figure is the big question. Late adoption of Y2K is worrisome. The flood gates are now rumored to be opening, and we may not have good data for a month or two. My initial guess is a shaky 50% here too. I wish I had a survey.
