533MHz, 500MHz, 466MHz PowerPC chips to be available 2nd Q 97, according to Exponential. Exponential says it is demonstrating its "X704" processor this week at the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, installed in an otherwise unmodified PowerMac 9500, and shown running Mac applications.

Exponential claims to have solved the heat problem with a new heat sink and fan, and currently has the capacity to produce 300,000 chips per year. Each chip will cost $1,000 in quantity.

Power Computing's Director of Product Marketing says "it's for real", and that his company plans to release a system with the X704 chip in April '97. He also says Exponential could double the performance of their chip within a year.
