There is a fundamental change underway in the transition to MR heads. MR and GMR provide a very large increase in density. As a result we are seeing fewer platters per drive and heads per drive on new hard drives.

As I sit here typing on my 5-year old 486 with covers removed, I see 9 heads on the 255 mbyte C drive and 12 heads on the 341 mbyte D drive, both Western Digital Caviar models. OK, I don't actually see the heads, the labels on the disks tell me how many heads.

How many heads are the new MR-based WD, Quantum, Maxtor, Seagate etc. drives going to have?

Fewer than my old Caviars.

That's the dilemma and that's why I can't tell if APM is a $2 stock, a$10 stock or a $60 stock.

Regards,

Dave Chanoux
