Re: Selectable software "difficulty levels"

I've often wondered why software shops don't build more expertise-tiering into their products. A beginner shouldn't be bombarded by zillions of choices and options. A guided tour should be available to lead a novice through the basic functionality of the product. Most of the advanced, little-used, or configurable options should be hidden away until activated by a conscious choice by the user.

There are a few programs that do this well.

... And then there are a few that do this poorly. So it all depends on the implementation ...

Certainly Windows and typical productivity apps are WAY WAY WAY too powerful and complicated for the neophyte. Most apps start at level three, as you say, even though most people have never even considered making their own soap. <g>

I've never actually used Bob, but I think I'd like to now, to evaluate the product so I can decided whether Bob failed because it was a good product ahead of its time or it was a piece of crap. Either way, the time for the EZPC is at hand.

God bless,
PX
