VLSI Licenses NCTI Algorithms for Use In ICs For Cellular & PCS Phone Market
Business Wire - February 10, 1998 10:42
STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1998--Noise Cancellation Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: NCTI) today announced that VLSI Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: VLSI) has licensed NCTI's ClearSpeech(TM) noise cancellation and ClearSpeech echo cancellation algorithms for use with its current and future integrated circuits (ICs) targeted to the digital cellular and PCS phone market, as well as emerging Computer Telephony markets. In consideration for this license, NCTI will receive an up front license fee and ongoing per-unit royalties. These noise cancellation algorithms will be integrated by VLSI into their VVS3670 Vector(TM) Multicore Development Platform, a multicore development environment composed of a flexible development platform supported by a complete suite of software tools and embeddable cores. This will enable VLSI to incorporate the algorithms as options into their own digital baseband standard products as well as into ASIC designs for VLSI customers. Additionally, VLSI will supply NCTI with noise cancellation ICs and other VLSI ICs for use by NCTI for all of its applications. "NCTI's algorithms integrated as an option in VLSI's Vector Multicore Development System will enable us to create noise-free and echo-free cellular communications solutions that are both high performance as well as low-cost," said Thierry Laurent, senior vice president and general manager of VLSI's Communication Products Group. "Our agreement with NCTI gives us leading-edge technology to succeed in today's and tomorrow's markets." Michael Parrella, President, NCT added, "We are very pleased to have VLSI, a market leader, as a customer for our technology. Furthermore, VLSI's commitment to a long-term development program of leading-edge, low-cost ICs upon which we can build our various noise cancellation algorithms will enable us to overcome the price and performance barriers that have prevented us from entering high-volume markets until this time." NCTI's ClearSpeech(TM) algorithm is specifically designed to remove background noise from speech and other transmitted signals. It greatly improves intelligibility and clarity of all communications applications and can be used in conjunction with line cards, switches, PBX's, car phones, air phones, cellular and public telephones, two-way radios, microcassette recorders, dictation devices, teleconferencing systems and speech-activated "smart" consumer products. The echo cancellation algorithm cancels acoustical echo for all hands-free telephony operations including cellular and speaker phones. The current list of licensees for ClearSpeech technology includes Intel Corporation, Oki Electric Company, HM Electronics and Interactive Products, Inc. VLSI Technology, Inc. designs and manufactures System-Level Silicon(TM) integrated circuits based on its FSB(TM) functional system blocks library. Targeting its offerings toward the communications, consumer digital entertainment and computing markets, the company offers its customers advanced system-level integration capabilities. The company is based in San Jose, California, with 1997 revenues from continuing operations of $712 million, and approximately 2,600 employees worldwide. Visit VLSI's homepage at vlsi.com. NCTI is a leading technology developer with an extensive portfolio of proprietary algorithms and a wide variety of product offerings for consumer, commercial and industrial applications.
