I would like to respond to why a Hospital like USC and others would be involved in clinical trials.

Before a hospital will consider their participation in such a project they look at the bottom line in what it will do for the Hospital and it's reputation. No business wants to make a decision that will hurt them or their reputations. No business wants to make a decision that will hurt them or their reputations. Hospitals in particular like USC investigate thoroughly that the trials of such medications, equipment and procedures are on the cutting edge and will most likely be approved. But why? Because when these new treatments are successful and approved by FDA their names are included in the documentation. Patients and their families offer their gratitude to the hospitals who were willing to help beneficial treatments become available to the public and their family members. Their gratitude comes in the form of grant money, gift donations, research monies and scholarships. these all further promote them as a leader in the area of research and further attract those professionals and scholars needed to expand their departments and increase their notoriety.

Is a University Hospital or any Hospital for that matter going to risk their reputation and credibility on a new procedure that has less then a high probability of success? No!

A good example was the University of Utah Medical Center which participated in the clinical trials of the artificial heart. The reputation and money generated from those trials was invaluable. Today they are a major center for medical research in the United States. It has led many of my colleges to relocate to Utah to take advantage of this research. It provides additional treatment and help for patients which may increase their quality of life.
