Citrix Dominates Thin-Client Paradigm Shift

By Albert Pang

Regardless of who ships the thin client products for Internet access this year, chances are it will be using Citrix Systems' software and protocols to run the ubiquitous Windows applications.

Citrix is on the verge of becoming a monopoly in its own right: allowing corporations to run servers that can deliver multiple sessions of Windows applications to users sitting in front of these thin clients.

Mike Cristinziano, an analyst with Gerard, Klauer, Mattison & Co. estimates that for every thin client that gets shipped at prices ranging from $500 to $1,000, Citrix could receive a royalty between $50 and $100.

Even Microsoft rival Sun has licensed the WinFrame protocol from Citrix, realizing that many users who plan to buy JavaStations would want to use them to access Windows applications, Cristinziano says.
