Rod-you can call it a paper loss, but when my net worth falls by $12000, thats real, whether I have sold the stock or not. Theoretically, one could ensure that they never lost money in the market simply by choosing never to sell. I don't think my banker would be swayed by that argument if I wanted to use my portfolio as collateral for a loan. He would not be impressed with how much I invested, only how much I currently have.
