Some dismissed talk of a merger between Merrill Lynch, the nation's biggest broker, and Chase Manhattan, the biggest bank in terms of assets, as old speculation. But action in both stocks suggested otherwise: Merrill, which leapt 4 1/4 Tuesday to break out of a 4 1/2-month base, added 7 1/4 to 87 on nearly four times its average volume.
