Oakley Releases First Shipment of New X Metal Mars Eyewear

Business Editors

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 1998--Oakley Inc. (NYSE:OO) Thursday announced it has begun to ship its latest model in the X Metal line, Mars, to selected Oakley retailers worldwide.

Mars will carry a suggested retail price in the U.S. of $265 in natural metal and $315 with stitched leather detailing.

Mars is configured in two variations, one with stitched leather detailing and one without. Both Mars frames incorporate flex couplers and interchangeable nose bombs. The flex couplers feature interchangeable Unobtainium pads, allowing for the geometrically stable frame to comfortably accommodate a variety of different head sizes while retaining lenses with an unparalleled degree of precision. Mars also incorporates Oakley's patented XYZ Optics technology, with which the company demonstrates superior optical quality in a wrapped and raked non-prescription dual lens design.

As previously announced in October, the design of Mars was influenced by Michael Jordan, a member of Oakley's Board of Directors. Michael Jordan, who received his pair with serial no.000023, also is featured in the Mars advertising campaign, launched last month.

"Having successfully completed the complex design and production phase of Mars' development on schedule, we look forward to presenting our new X Metal creation to consumers and building on the excitement surrounding this anticipated release," said Jim Jannard, chairman and president of Oakley.

"Beyond the evolution of our X Metal line, 1998 is ramping up to be a significant year for new product introductions."

The roll out of Mars follows the January release of Oakley's new Racing Jacket. In addition, the company previously announced the upcoming launch of the Minute sunglass and A Frame goggle, both of which are planned for release in early spring.

Photographs of Mars can be seen on Oakley's Web site (www.oakley.com).

Oakley. A company obsessed with the design and manufacture of inventions that defy convention. Creative fields of operation include high-performance eyewear and athletic equipment.
