>>Katherine, you seem technically very knowledgeable. Do you (or anyone) have an
opinion on the relative merits of DPMI and PLAB from a technology point of
view, and from an investment point of view?<<

From a technology point of view, they are both facing major process and equipment upgrades in the next few years. The company that is able to do that successfully will have a big advantage going forward. DPMI has been in the news a lot lately, which may indicate that they are taking the lead, but may also just indicate that they have a more aggressive PR machine and clients who are more willing to talk. I haven't heard anything to suggest that PLAB is asleep at the switch.

I'm not familiar enough with either company to comment on their investment potential.

>> (I have always thought highly of the
DuPont relationship.) Also do you have a view on the merits of ETEC and CYMI
versus those two? <<

That's an apples vs. oranges comparison. Both DPMI and PLAB make photomasks. ETEC makes mask writing tools, and thus is a supplier to both DPMI and PLAB. The coming upgrade cycle is probably a good thing for ETEC, since both the mask houses will need to buy a *lot* of mask writers. CYMI makes lasers, and is thus even further removed from the actual mask. At the high end, e-beam writers seem to be displacing laser writers, (better resolution) but that's not bad news for CYMI because of the parallel growth in lasers for wafer exposure.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
