Over the past few months I have heard stories along the lines of producers unwinding their hedge positions. The following paragraph from a Reuters story this morning is typical:

But producers have also been active of late, with Australia's Western Mining Co Ltd saying
Thursday it had ''locked in'' a A$310.8 million pre-tax net profit from a substantial reduction in its
gold hedging position.

What does this mean?
