Either: a) Stock traders and investors don't read the newspapers, so the market has not discounted the bad news; or b) Stock traders and investors do read the newspapers, but they don't believe what they read, so the market has not discounted the bad news; or c) Any impacts to early- to mid-1998 semi industry earnings caused by the Asian flu were discounted by the market in late 1997.
