>>> IBM is scrambling to transition away from mainframe, AS400, and RS6000 business without letting anyone know, kind of like an elephant trying to tiptoe. Sun has to move from their SPARC base to a standard platform and somehow embrace NT without losing their position as the last bastion of 'real' Unix. <<<

I would say that many large companies are re-evaluating client-server and are giving main frames and minis a second look. Server centric and web centric computing delivers greater scalability, better security and it's a real bitch having to manage an NT server farm versus just one box with say 32 or more sparc processors running unix. This one of the reasons SUNW has been doing so well and one of the reasons why CPQ wants DEC.
