ATM-Backdoor Security

Now that you mention it, I remember a prior discussion of fingerprint biometrics in backdoor security. However I was really interested in whether anyone in the US was using fingerprint sensors for front door security. I am somewhat surprised that apparently the first and only use of biometrics in fron door ATM(in the US) is iris scan.

I wonder if fingerprint phobia plays into this. I would think that the first widespread general consumer use would require an education campaign to convince the general public that the fingerprint capture is not compatible with police fingerprints.

Last night, while driving home from the Y, I listened to about 10 minutes of a talkshow(on a major radio station) discussion of USA Today's iris scanning ATM article. The hostess expressed many apparently sincere if ludicrous concerns. One was that criminals would now gouge out eyes to bring to the ATMs. Another was since(according to her) the eyeball can yield a persons medical history and current diagnosis the banks would now have this information( and would of course share it with the government). I don't know if they discussed fingerprint scanning but I can imaging similar concerns there.
