Sam. Your mention of Lester Thurow gave me a good laugh. While I tend to agree with him on the subject of your post, his analysis of foreign economies over the years has been pretty poor. If you remember it was Thurow and others like Robert Reich that were advocating that the United States adopt more of Japan's economic style less than 10 years ago. How one decade has changed things!

I can't resist one more shot at Mr. Thurow who wrote the following praise about the Soviet economy:

"Can economic command significantly compress and accelerate the growth process? The remarkable performance of the Soviet Union suggests that it can. In 1920, Russia was but a minor figure in the economic councils of the world. Today it is a country whose economic achievements bear comparison with those of the United States."

Mr. Thurow wrote that in 1989! I'll bet he wishes he could retract that.
