While that's true, it was also true of all the "SX" products as well. "386 without the 32-bit bus", "486 without the co-processor" are phrases that come to mind.

In the end, it DIDN'T matter for consumers, because most of them never really understood what either of those things were, just as most of them don't know what "Onboard L2 Cache" is. The marketing is there to convince them that Intel is doing a great favor to consumers by offering a product which saves them money by leaving out features which they don't need.

Also, of course, there is no effective industry countermeasure to this intiative. What are AMD, Cyrix and NSM going to say? "We have no L2 cache too?" That just highlights the fact that Intel's product line scales upwards...
