irthrifty,

Yes, I read about gates today in the paper after arriving home from Thailand. It got very big headlines here. He has reconfirmed Microsoft's commitment to the MSC and held meetings here about that and the launch of a youth training effort in which he is making a major donation. Of course, every piece of good news here is used to point to Malaysia's "recovery" and the propaganda machine here is quite awesome. That an American with Gate's visiblity offers Mahatir some legitimacy is sucked up like cattle drinking at a desert mudhole. Mahatir has publicly stated that the MSC has priority and will not be delayed by the economic crisis here, a pledge he reiterated to Gates in their meetings according to the press. The paper went on about the "technological miracle" that Mahatir had performed. I had to laugh as I think about how difficult it is to get a phone line here. Or get a decent connection to the internet. Or rely on steady supplies of water and electricity for that matter.

Here, people pay their bills to the government in person, in order to get a hand written receipt. Thats because if they mail something it inevitably is "lost". This goes for tax bills, traffic fines, whatever. In order to do this you must stand in a long line and it takes a half a day by the time the ordeal is over. Its the main reason people are so quick to pay off a policeman with a bribe.

Malaysia has a long way to go...Multimedia Super Corridor or not.

Best,
Stitch
