There are a lot of things you can fault IBM for doing, but investing for the short term is generally not one of them?

What would they get for their money if they bought AMD?

A processor design which already can't keep up with Intel. (No 100MHz bus, no SMP, no on-board Cache)

Furthermore, a product line which doesn't account for any of the changes which will take place when Merced comes out.

Additionally, a product which doesn't really fit their long-term strategy of focusing on a world of interconnected machines of VARIOUS types, with JAVA software as the common thread. Kind of hard to reconcile a bet on a single PC architecture with a corporation which is dedicated to making cheap hardware with universal software. (IBM is a bigger proponent of this than SUNW!)

Fab capacity which they don't really need, and which ALREADY needs to be upgraded. (Mostly .35 micron, I believe)
