Dallas Semiconductor Corporation First Quarter 1998 Results To Be Below Expectations
DALLAS, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Dallas Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: DS - news) said today that it expects sales and earnings for its first quarter ending March 29, 1998 to be lower than in the preceding quarter. The Company expects sales for the first quarter of 1998 to be down approximately 6% compared to fourth quarter revenues of $95.4 million. Earnings per share for the first quarter of 1998 is expected to be approximately the same or slightly below the first quarter a year ago, which was $0.50 per share.

''Softness in orders from Asia due to poor economic conditions and weakness in wireless communications and PC/workstation peripheral markets are contributing to the decline in sales,'' said Vin Prothro, Chairman and CEO. ''We will not have a final analysis until we finish the quarter, but it appears that orders from Asia will be down while North America and Europe will be about the same compared to the preceding quarter.

''Given the uncertainties affecting our industry and the Company's limited visibility, our outlook for the second quarter is necessarily cautious. During this time, we are focusing on fundamentals such as design wins, new product introductions, cost controls and factory efficiency to enhance our competitive strengths,'' Mr. Prothro concluded.

Dallas Semiconductor Corporation develops, manufactures and markets high performance Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuits and semiconductor-based systems that provide innovative and cost-effective solutions to electronic design problems in a wide range of existing and emerging markets.

''Safe Harbor'' statement under the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995: With the exception of historical information, the matters discussed in this news release are forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties including, but not limited to, economic conditions, competition, manufacturing performance, new product development, market acceptance of the Company's new products and other risks indicated in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
