As you mentioned, it may take more than one run to reach all the branched code. The Alpha translator produces code each time you run it, not just the first time. However, the majority of the code is covered in the first run. There's an article describing DEC's technology in the latest issue of Byte. They gave it some kind of technology award because it's the first emulator/translator ever produced that works without intolerably slowing a system down.
