Hi rudedog,
Been reading over what I could find on IBM. You are right, RS6000, S/390 and AS/400 sales all down. Looks like they are making money on software (smart move splitting it from hardware) and services. Gerstner says things are turning around, but sounds like things are still very much in flux.
So, you think they will not be able to grow their proprietary system sales and will have to beef up Unix and NT based servers? Makes me wonder if by the time NT5.0 and Merced come out, if the game will be over for other server technology. Why is Sun selling so well and IBM is not? Is Unix considered an "Open" system were as OS/400 is not? Are you sure IBM can not turn things around?
If the DEC/CPQ combination becomes the dominant NT organization (they will have the fastest processor for running NT until Merced comes out, and DEC has been working on a suite of programs to enhance NT) then where will that leave IBM and HWP, if their respective systems base stops growing?
More questions then answers tonight, just trying to think things through.
