Maggott,
they aren't a particular wavelength or a band of wavelengths. It's more like a weighted average of several bands. If you think of color like I do, in the RGB colorspace, it's confusing. But, basically, Hunter Labs (http://www.hunterlab.com/ ) came up with a different representation that is more like what your eye sees. Hunter L is something like the brightness of the color and Hunter b is the blueness. There's a decent article about it at [ qualitymag.com ].
