Gary - Re: "I was under the impression that Merced in fact is designed from the ground-up to work with HP-Unix, SCO's Unix, and other such flavors?"

Merced was designed to execute a 64 bit version of HP's PA-RISC instruction set as well as 32 bit x86 instructions.

It will, therefore, easily support HP's Unix (HP-UX).

As with any "general purpose" CPU, most operating systems can also be adapted to run on Merced.

Many others are being adapted now - Solaris (Sun), Unixware (SCO) , NT (Microsoft) and probably IRIS (SGI).
