The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that shares of Rainmaker Digital
Pictures have sunk to a 52-week low after the company posted slumping profits.
Reporter Angela Barnes notes that Michael Deighton, who follows Rainmaker for
Groome Capital Advisory, says the slide might be a knee-jerk reaction by the
market. Jason Zandberg, an analyst at Pacific International Securities, agrees. He
says he thinks the stock was oversold on Thursday. He says the market,
whenever it has these negative surprises, tends to overreact somewhat. Rob
Millham of C.M. Oliver is not so sure. He felt the decline was probably deserved,
because the company delivered a bit of a bombshell with the numbers. Mr
Deighton says that in writing off the startup costs of its digital video disc business,
Rainmaker is taking a conservative approach to accounting, especially since the
market is just starting to evolve. He says, however, that with the number of DVD
titles expanding, demand for the units could well rise.
