-- Hewlett-Packard Co (HWP - news) is to announce plans to market its
own variant of Java software, breaking with Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW
- news), the Wall Street Journal reported. It said Hewlett-Packard
would now compete with Sun, the creator of Java, and had signed a deal
with Microsoft Corp (MSFT - news). Hewlett-Packard closed at 63 on
Thursday.

Hell, Sun doesn't need to worry about a Microsoft sponsored Java
fragmenting strategy.

Novell is already making noises about their dissatisfaction with Sun
over Java.

It is a pipe dream to think a group of companies (IBM, Sun, Novell,
Netscape) can set Java standards when they are competitors of one
another.

I thought we learned this lesson with Unix. The wonderful unix
standards committees brought us crap like Motif which is why Unix is
suffering today.
