Casino opponents push for new vote
Pontiac
Oakland County commissioners went on record against an Indian casino in their backyard and should do the same before casinos come to Detroit, members of the Coalition to Repeal Proposal E say.
The coalition is conducting a petition drive to force a vote on whether to overturn the 1996 statewide referendum that permitted three casinos in Detroit. The group needs 247,000 signatures by May 27 to put the question on the November ballot.
Voter apathy allowed Proposal E to win by default, said coalition member Pete Peters, of Sylvan Lake.
" Only 51 per cent voted on the issue and it passed by three per cent. That's hardly a mandate. "
The Oakland County Board of Commissioners should lend its support to the coalition, Peters said.
" They passed a unanimous resolution that they don't want to see
the Bay Mills tribe in Auburn Hills, " he said. " We're going to see if they're willing to stand up and stop casinos in the City of Detroit. "
County Executive L. Brooks Patterson supports a new vote on the
Detroit casinos, calling them harmful to Oakland County's entertainment industry.
