Bottom line, of 23 biotech companies chosen to make an index back in 1983 (by the journal that now goes by the name "Nature Biotechnology"), just 3 exist today as independent, successful enterprises (a couple, Immunex and Genentech have thrived but they are majority-owned by AHP and Roche, respectively).

Amusing if not encouraging,
