Syquest
Robert Metz

The latest battleground on the desktop is portable data storage devices. Iomega (IOM:NYSE) virtually invented the business with its Zip drive, compressing 100 megabytes of data into a disc roughly the size of a 3.5-inch floppy. Competitor Syquest (SYQT:Nasdaq) developed a competitive product, but missed the consumer market when it targeted enterprise applications. Syquest also missed the kind of explosive stock gains Iomega garnered.

But now, with Iomega shares trading near their 12-month low, financial journalist Robert Metz is hearing Syquest's belated entry into the consumer market may offer an opportunity for investors. He points out technical comparisons give Syquest's Sparq product the nod for higher capacity and speed, not to mention that it's a lot cheaper. With Iomega reportedly planning a $100 million advertising campaign, researchers at Value Line say its stock performance will be closely tied to the marketing's success or failure. On the other hand, some people believe Syquest just has a superior product, at a lower cost.

TheStreet.com's Herb Greenberg reported on the Iomega-Syquest battle in a recent column.
