Stephen; The only people shorts can make money off are those
that sell..when the faint hearted or the over extended ( on margins )
are all gone a new crop of smarter money comes into the the stock.
Some shorts do make money, but out of the ones that get hooked
into it..records show that 2/3rds of them lose, about a third
seem to do OK..but over half the winners are brokerage houses
that "front" sell. You may have heard on the News today how the
DOJ is investigating front selling riight on the floor of the
NYSE..the wall street gang will get all indignate about it and
say it's best if they self regulate ( thats the problem they
never really do ) ..but any way it's what we got and have to live
with..but the front selling goes on and is common place
with in house orders getting first shot over your order..this
does not hurt longer term investors , it takes a big cut out
of the short termers when added together. If they killed all
front selling then shorting a stock would be much harder,
as the brokers would not want to borrow stock for people to
short if they did not get a slice of the pie. The little shorters
are the ones who get eat up so bad, but as soon as one goes
broke another one comes along that thinks he is smarter than
the big boys and takes his place, and sometimes wins just
enough to really walk into a trap. Track the guy who shorts all
the time..and you'll discover a born loser.
