From Silcon Valley Tech Week (3/9/98):

"E-commerce, with it's associated fields of Internet security and legacy systems interfacing, might just be the most lucrative area [for programmers] in software these days. Two types of e-commerce systems are particularly hot right now: digital certificate software, fueled by the adoption of the Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) protocol ... and smart cards."

I thought this was interesting, because we do not have smart cards right now, and while the SET protocol has industry approval from the likes of H-P, VISA, MasterCard, IBM and Microsoft, I am not sure that digital certificates have been implemented widely.

Yet these are among the hottest paying software programming jobs in the Valley right now....
