Re: 1394 and Intel chipsets

My friend, your posts are getting better and better!

The scenario you describe of Adaptec getting stomped if 1394 gets integrated into standardized chipsets is an all-too-plausible one.

If it happens, I will unload my ADPT (which is already my worst dog of the past year, by far.)

However I don't expect it to happen soon. There's a little problem of a lack of 1394 devices, like hard disks. <g> Plus how do you know ADPT won't announce Ultrafat-Superwide-Megabuff-SCSI-IV-XL that brings SCSI up to the bar once again? <g>

There's also a little problem of squabbling over the 1394 evolution path between Sony and the others ...

Fibre Channel is also in the running, against 1394, for the next generation server-side disk array interface.

Free markets at work, indeed.

God bless,
PX

P.S. I think intergrating 1394 into the standard PC chipset, if it can be done cheaply, would be a BRILLIANT move for Intel. But they seem to be committed to evolving IDE ... and 1394 is as yet not a market-proven technology.

Hmm, I think I've just created a good reason to go out and buy me some 1394 toys <GGG>
