Rose-
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest.
<GW has been slammed on the Strictly Drilling thread.> I wouldn't exactly say 'slammed', more like a clear look at the fact that land drillers are going to be in for a rough ride while the present crude oil situations exist. (If I hear the LIST OF REASONS crude is depressed one more time, I might lose it!) Like yourself, I don't think crude, fossil fuels, or GW are going to evaporate as viable investments for a good long while, and even tho' I'm in G at $6+, do not plan on selling it any time soon.
<It feels like a gas distribution gouge on a local level.> Sure does. It's 'their baseball' and they can play any game they want to, it seems. Makes me feel a little better being in the OS sector to know that when they're biting me at the gas pump, I can bite 'em back a little at the portfolio level! (Same thing with going to the doctor and having a little bit of Vanguard Specialized Health fund.)
The only thing I've ever heard re: GW's manage. team is that when it was DI, their were several Diamond Offshore people that came over to DI. (Or started it up, this was last year or so, and my memory is getting overcrowded.) The DO connection inspired confidence in me, tho' I have yet to hear a clear rundown of 'who, why,...etc.' the alleged Diamond guys were.
On the more arcane side, I read that when they bought Grey Wolf Drilling that assumed that name "cuz' they liked it." Don't ask me why, but I liked that fact...
Nice talking to you.
