Herbvic, Only commodore made 64's, they were closed in that there were no clones. With Wintels there is a defacto CPU stream and a operating system stream and as long as they keep continuity there will never be a chance for another to get in edgewise.
Had the commodore people made them open like IBM did(in error) there would have been dozens of clones and ahuge market.
Chantinh a mantra does not imbue it with success, only the faithful join the chorus.

Steam had a chance, but the problems with freezing and steam up time could not be solved in those days. If Internal combustion and steam were new tech today steam would get a lot of converts, and could win. Steam engines work at lower cylinder temperatures and are inherently longer lasting. There have been some very good steam engines in the 40's and 50's for cars. Turbines beat them out, but cost more, and have more durability and power/weight. Hence armies use them where cost matters not.
