Apart from C-Cube's, I have in front of me a clipping on Sony's
single-chip MPEG-2 encoder. The part number is CXD1922Q, its
sampling now, and has one of the widest search ranges I've
seen -288 to +297.5 horizontal, -96 to +95.5 vertical. The part
combines a complete encoder, system controller and motion
estimator. Its packaged in a 208-QFP and is the perfect size
to glue to your computer monitor to remind you that Innovacom
can never be first.

The Japanese have been showing MPEG-2 single chip encoding
silicon at ISSCC every year. They're preliminary but at
least they have real silicon. In the past there have been
chips from NEC, Sony and Matsushita (Philips too, but since
they don't do B frames it doesn't really count). Each of
these companies has demonstrated far more than Innovacom.

By the time the Innovacom encoder is done, it will be simply
"another" single-chip encoder, not the "first". It remains
to be seen if it will even be a "good" encoder.

And of course there are other startups out there doing encoders
too... Have to watch out for these guys as well.
