General Instrument once said that they could fit 30,000 Internet customers on a single satellite transponder. That means that if Charlie devoted 16 transponders to Internet, he could serve almost 500k internet subs. But then he runs out of bandwidth. And, because satellite slots/freqs are a finite resource, he can't simply launch another.

So why should DISH pursue a DirecPc type strategy? They're better off doing data broadcasting, where they can send data to every box at one time. It is less demanding from a technical perspective, and can provide the average customer with the same benefits they get from Internet usage...
