By resolution, I'm talking about the number of horizontal lines that are painted on the screen. I don't know the exact number, but broadcast TV is something like 320, while DVD is 500+. A standard television is capable of painting up to 720 (or something). HDTV is over a thousand (?). (I don't the exact numbers, but comparatively speaking, these are close).
Since the number of lines is fixed, the larger the screen, the more distorted the image. Anyone with a big screen TV has encountered this. I thought I had read in one of the posted articles that the ACTV signal will contain more lines of resolution than a standard TV signal. My point was, for people like me (with big screen TVs), the added expense is worth it just for the sharper picture. The interactive feature is icing on the cake.
My question is, will I need a digital TV to take advantage of the higher resolution, or will the digital/analog converter spit out all the lines delivered to it?
My corollary question is, can I achieve my objective (of a sharper picture), simply by subscribing to a satellite service, such as DirectTV? |
