China plans to launch seven satellites in 1998

BEIJING, March 21 (Reuters) - China plans to launch seven satellites in 1998, including three Iridium satellites for U.S. electronics giant Motorola Co , the Guangming Daily said on Saturday.

They also included a Chinasat-8 satellite, an European-made Sinosat-1 and a Chinese-made satellite, the newspaper said.

The satellites would be launched by the Chinese-made Long March rockets, it said but gave no further details.

China's Great Wall Industry Corp this week signed a contract with U.S. Loral Space and Telecommunications Ltd for five launches between March 1998 and March 2002 using the Long March 3B rocket.

China completed all of its launches last year, including successfully putting into orbit two communications satellites for Motorola in December.

However, China's commercial satellite launch programme was plagued by a string of failures in 1995 and 1996, hurting the country's bid to grab a slice of the lucrative market.
