BamaReb<<we whupped your asses man for man.>>
Nice theory, and adequate for most those Northeastern Yankees (With a nod to the Vermont Brigade, 20th Maine, and Irish Brigade). But for a descendent of the 19th Indiana of the Iron Brigade and two soldiers in the Army of the Tennessee (Who always saw the backs of the Rebs at the end of the battle) we don't concede any man for man whuppin.
Longstreets boys in the West said they never saw Yankees that fought like those Westerners.
I will concede some leadership edge particularly at the beginning of the war and in the East in particular. My feeling is that Bobby Lee and Nathan Forrest added 2 years and 1 year to the war respectively. Other than Forrest the South in the West comes off poorly compared to Sherman, Grant, Thomas, Sheridan, and Schofield.
Biggest edge I would give the North was not in firearms where the South did quite well but rather in supplying food, medicine, superior numbers (particularly in the East where they were more needed) and very much a dominant navy.

Still can't find any family legends about any ancestors drilling a Reb answering the call of nature at Shiloh but I am trying.
