dd, everybody... Your input wanted. re: IRIX/MIPS.

After a very heated campfire chat with MD Camp... topic IRIX/MIPS... our collective wisdom now suggests that SGI -port- ...no, make that -retire-... IRIX/MIPS platform and replace it with a long term Solaris/Sparc/Merced strategy. Rationale:

1. COST. The UNIX wars are over. Solaris wins hands down. Competing against SUNW with IRIX/MIPS is now futile and extremely expensive. Joining forces with SUNW cuts down a tremendous amount of engineering budget, puts MIPS on the block and gives the Evil Empire a formidable UNIX contender to reckon with.

2. RANGE. Solaris is a far better UNIX solution for enterprise applications, which is exactly where SGI needs to migrate -fast- if they are to -grow- their business.

3. VALUE. SGI can still add value to Solaris with graphics extensions thus preserving their dominance in high-end visualization marketplace.

4. POWER. Bottom-line, a combined SGI/SUNW alliance is far more powerful today in the marketplace than a fractured one. Especially with Solaris running native mode on Merced. Again, the NT drones in Redmond would immediately take heed, their OS will no longer be the defacto Intel standard.

SUN/SGI??? Yes, the transition would be very tough, but given the above bullets, something SGI should now seriously consider... if they're not doing so already.

Just the humble opinion of several camel traders well feasted on leg of goat and fine desert spirits. Your thoughts???
