Yes -- I don't know what the "right" answer is either, but you're absolutely correct that the U.S. telecom industry (past?) is a prime example of going too far in the benevolent control direction. I would say on its behalf that our telecom industry provided us far superior service to what much of the European states had for many years, but then the Europeans suddenly fixed their problems and ended up with better technology than most of the U.S. has.
