Of course he bought it because he thought the value would go up according to the inexorable laws of supply and demand. Sometimes economic decisions (hell, all decisions) have more than one motivating factor.

In my post I was conjecturing that a conceivable element in Buffett's decision might have been a special aspect of the world economic situation that some experts consider alarming-- the conjunction of the arrival of the euro and of y2k.

What made it occur to me was, specifically, his taking physical delivery of the silver. I am not the first person to note that this is a little unusual. Would you happen to know whether he took delivery of the silver he purchased thirty years ago?

My post was in a conversational spirit, in any case. I didn't offer it as fact. Conjecture is allowed on this thread. You might have less occasion for disapproval if you restrict yourself to the Research Thread.
