Geoff, I think the election will make the market turn down because soooo many people think it will. Stock technicals and fundamentals are useful when all other factors are equally balanced. However, factors like news releases and public sentiment will always supersede techs and funds because of their ability to polarize opinion in extreme disproportion. In the end, when public opinion on any subject is too one sided, the outcome is self-fulfilling. Basically, I think a good knowledge of mass market psychology will lead to better trading outcomes under extreme market conditions than relying on the analysis of what price a particular stock "deserves" at any point in time.
