Paul, what I have laid out for you is called "Modern Portfolio Theory". It has garnered a raft of Nobel prizes in economics, and it has a very firm theoretical as well as empirical foundation. It is taught in virtually every MBA program in the country. You can read an excellent summary of the thinking, observation and evidence behind this approach in Burton Malkiel's "A Random Walk Down Wall Street". The book is available in paperback for under $20. This book should be a must read for every investor.

Maybe after you've had a chance to read the evidence you'll change your mind.

Regards,

Paul
