Re: crossover

I'm a lurker here. I monitor this thread for the sake of gaining information about trends within the PC industry. Because of pricing trends RAM is the last thing that wholesalers wish to have large inventories of. Hence when there is a rapid change in the PC industry I believe that it shows up in RAM first.

IMHO there is a quantum change taking place within the PC industry. The shift to the sub $1000 machine caught Intel, and many of the boxmakers, by surprise. Consumers of PC are now at a point where they have slowed down their purchases to see if prices will get even lower. This makes the situation even worse for the semi folks.

From the short straw pole that I did with my old wholesale suppliers I get the impression that the demand for the sub $1000 has slowed slightly and the demand for PCs within the $1500-$2500 class has slowed dramatically. It seems to me that business has discovered that they don't need the high end for the vast majority of their applications.

It also seems to me that RAM manufacturers have continued their plans based on the old model of growth within the PC area. That is: assume crossover intact. Slow 16MB production to focus on 64MB.

The PC trend is for lower and lower priced PCs. When you consider the kind of parts that currently make up the low end of the PC spectrum, it would be no surprise to discover that the 4x4 chip may last much longer than many expect.

Again .. I'll back away and watch you folks.
