Jack, you mention the 80-year-old who undergoes hernia repair in same-day surgery and is then sent home where there is no one to care for him postsurgically. I have heard of patients being denied needed surgery because they have no one at home to look after them postoperatively and/or they live in areas where the visiting nurses fear to tread. Of course, no one tells the patient that that is the reason surgery is being denied. Holly
